  1. Ian, I strongly disagree.

Garzon is no impartial judge. He's obviously politically motivated. He's been an outspoken critic of the Bush administration since day one and it's abundantly clear to everyone who knows him that he has an axe to grind. By wielding universal jurisdiction like a weapon he would only succeed in negating decades of development in the legal field of international cooperation. While I approve of the efforts he made against Pinochet, it's now apparent it went to his head. Let's call it by it's name: this is a witch hunt.

The legal system cannot be abused to score political points. Ironically enough, that would be significantly more of a threat to individual rights and liberties than Bush ever posed.

In fact, that's the only real justification for Obama's position, is that he's afraid he'll be giving the green light to rabid partisans who just want to see Bush burn. That cannot and should not be allowed.

The only thing that makes sense is a carefully selected, impartial investigation, free from outside pressures and influence that can take it's time carefully researching the facts and weighing everything involved.

Torture is a serious crime and human rights violation and it cannot be allowed, in any circumstance. Especially in this type of political climate, one must be very careful that all due process is carried out in an impartial manner.

  2. Sorry, that last sentence should read: "But, especially in this type of political climate, one must..."
